The Art of Cozy: Nancy Meyers
Even if you don’t know her name, you know likely know her iconic movies, (or if your anything like me, you know these iconic homes)! I’ve been studying the art of cozy lately, which naturally has led me to the Queen of Cozy spaces herself, Nancy Meyers.
So, what is it about Nancy Meyers interiors that draw us in?
For me, I feel like all of her interiors capture the nuances of how real people live, all of the details that make a house a home. The pictures on the refrigerators, stacks of books, the copper pots hanging in the kitchen, fresh herbs by the windowsill, big bowls of fruit, console tables crowded with framed family photos. It’s comforting, charming and interesting.
Although they vary in styles from movie to movie (from coastal to modern & eclectic), the all have some common denominators: inviting, interesting, layered, warm, collected, often with some mismatched pieces. As a result, the interiors for each movie tell the story as much as the plot does.
Lamps
Even if the space is well lit from natural light sources or overhead, there is always a lamp nearby which adds that little bit of warmth.
Layers
Her spaces have no shortage of throw blankets, pillows and places to sit.
Natural Materials
I can spot a sisal or jute rug in just about all of her spaces, regardless of the design style.
Stripes on Stripes
Nancy utilizes stripes in all formats, from a nautical stripe, to a cozy pinstripe, deconstructed stripes, you name it!
Non-Matchy
Theres a wide range of patterns, colors, & textures in her spaces, but rather than feeling as if they feel as if they were all selected at once (somewhat contrived), these elements all compliment one another without being perfectly “matched.”
Last but certainly not least - all of these spaces feel like REAL people live there. They aren’t perfect, they are far from museum like, and they look like well loved, well lived in and collected. Which is my theory of why we are all so drawn to Nancy’s work ❤️
